Case Study

An Oak Orangery for a 17th-Century Northamptonshire Stone Barn

Project Overview

When Mr and Mrs McMurdo decided to replace their small, ageing uPVC conservatory, they knew they wanted something truly special. An oak orangery that would look as though it had always been part of their beautiful 17th-century stone barn in a Northamptonshire conservation village.

Their goal was simple: create a warm, bright living space they could enjoy in their retirement, blending seamlessly with the charm of their home and garden. It had to be practical in all seasons, offer more space both indoors and on an expanded patio, and deliver premium quality without exhausting their savings.

After researching online, they discovered Hallmark Glazed Extensions — specialists in oak orangeries designed to complement character properties while delivering modern comfort and performance.

Client Profile:

  • Name: Mr & Mrs McMurdo
  • Design Highlights: Seasoned Oak windows, doors and roof lantern, automated roof vents, high specification solar control glass
  • Location: Northamptonshire
  • The Vision: Create a bright new living space, blending with the existing house appearance, with natural flow between home and garden, useable all year round.

Designing the Perfect Oak Orangery

From their first meeting, Hallmark Glazed Extensions’ designer Paul impressed them with his expertise in garden buildings, particularly oak-framed orangeries. He presented a beautifully detailed digital design that showed exactly how the new structure would enhance the property and meet their needs.

Paul guided them through the entire process, from planning applications to cost breakdowns, and introduced Gareth, Hallmark Glazed Extensions' in-house planning consultant, who secured swift approval. Gareth even advised on stonework selection to ensure perfect conservation compliance and a flawless visual match to the existing barn.

Precision Craftsmanship & Installation

Once the plans were approved, Hallmark Glazed Extensions' senior surveyor Dave took charge. He coordinated a trusted local builder to carry out the demolition of the old conservatory, complete the groundworks, and handle the internal finishes and electrics.

The oak orangery frames and glazing were carefully installed by Hallmark Glazed Extensions' experienced team. Every detail was considered, from the insulation levels to the quality of the joinery, resulting in an orangery that combines timeless character with modern performance.

A Room for Every Season

The finished oak orangery is light-filled, energy efficient, and comfortable year-round. Heat-reflective double-glazed windows, automated roof lantern vents, and double patio doors create a natural flow between home and garden. In summer, the space opens up to the outdoors; in winter, it becomes a warm and inviting retreat.
