One difference between an orangery and a conservatory is the amount of glazing used.
Conservatories have more glass than orangeries.
Conservatories tend to have a solid brick or stone base with two-thirds of the walls and roof made of glass, making a light-filled, bright indoor living space and at the same time, creating a wonderful connection with your garden. Orangeries have a similar feel to a traditional extension.
An orangery typically has a glazed roof lantern set within a flat roof, enabling natural light to flood in and the walls will have large windows and doors to connect and open up to the outside space.
Let’s talk about the budget
Another difference between a conservatory and an orangery is cost. Conservatories can be the more affordable option as the structure and build is simpler and more likely to be a separate room attached to your house, whereas orangeries tend to be more bespoke and complex structures and like a traditional extension, integrate easily within an existing living space.
An orangery may also require planning permission and building regulations, which are an
additional cost and would need to be considered within your budget.
Adding a conservatory or an orangery is an investment for your home and while both add value, the difference is an orangery will typically add up to 15% of the value of your home, whereas a conservatory will add around 5-10% of the value.
