Are Conservatories Seriously Uncool?

Recently, some articles have been hot off the press concerning the humble conservatory being akin to a horror story for a home!

‘Conservatories are so undesirable, according to Chris Hodgkinson, managing director of the House Buyer Bureau, that they can devalue your home to the tune of £15,000.’

With some very bold statements, the clickbait articles have indicated that conservatories might be a bit…….naff!

In this blog, we shall look at the sweeping statements and put forward some of the ‘facts’ which may not fill column inches but should reassure anyone with a conservatory or anyone thinking of buying a conservatory!

We agree that some older conservatories may not be considered fit for purpose, mostly to do with the fact many have included polycarbonate roofs or low-spec solar control glass.

The same can be said of new ones today, where poor design advice is given due to either lack of experience, cheap products being used, or simply wanting to buy on the cheap.

Conservatories are Usable All Year Round!

There is no reason today why a conservatory can’t be useable all year round due to the vast product technological advancements with frame materials and glass spec that will ensure improved thermal efficiency.

A well-designed conservatory will ensure a living space that provides an abundance of natural light and extended views of the garden.

Whilst orangery style extensions are on trend and suit many property aesthetics and home lifestyle requirements, we are still designing new conservatories or replacing existing ones with a conservatory due to clients' preferences.

As a company, we will design a glazed extension solution that suits clients' wants and needs. Often the outcome is based on the financial investment a client allocates to a project, which determines the frame choice. For example, aluminium, oak, uPVC, and the design style and size.

We asked our friendly local estate agent for his view on properties with conservatories; this is what he had to say:

“It isn’t a one rule fits all regarding conservatories. The word conservatory can be perceived so; differently; some may envisage a poly-roofed, poorly insulated bolt-on to the rear, while the reality of a modern conservatory is usually a trendy all-year-round usable, valuable, and beneficial space.

Should the earlier be the reality, it would be considered a hindrance rather than a help when it comes to selling. Still, the latter would, in my opinion, increase both its saleability and achievable value.”
