With spring in full swing and temperatures slowly rising, many eagerly anticipate warmer weather and the possibility of a heatwave this summer in the UK. Predictions of a Heatwave
Forecasts suggest that 2023 might bring a heatwave to the UK, as the return of the 'El Niño' climate phenomenon indicates a likelihood of surpassing a 1.5°C increase in global warming. The hottest year ever recorded, 2016, was also marked by a significant El Niño event, which refers to the periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific.
Carlo Buontempo, director of the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, has stated that El Niño is often associated with record-breaking temperatures on a global scale. Although it remains uncertain whether this will occur in 2023 or 2024, it is considered more likely than not. Friederike Otto, a senior lecturer at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, further supports this notion, suggesting that if El Niño develops, 2023 may surpass the heat experienced in 2016.
Early Signs of Heat
The UK has already witnessed the arrival of a 'mini' heatwave in mid-April, with temperatures surpassing those of the preceding weeks. On April 29th, the highest temperature recorded in 2023 thus far reached 20.2°C in Pershore, Worcestershire. Northern Ireland experienced a peak of 20°C at Castle Derg, while Llysdinam in Wales recorded 19.2°C.
Meteorologists predict that London and Plymouth will witness the hottest temperatures, with highs of 17°C expected. Manchester and Belfast are projected to reach 16°C. It's important to note that the return of El Niño could impact temperatures worldwide, making hotter-than-average conditions prevalent not only in the UK but also across the globe.

Prospects for a Hot Summer
The Met Office has forecasted that 2023 will be warmer than 2022, potentially ranking among the hottest years on record. Temperatures are expected to rise by 1.08°C to 1.32°C, marking the tenth consecutive year of global temperatures exceeding 1°C above average. This increase is attributed to climate change and the end of the La Niña weather pattern, which had caused cooler-than-average sea temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.
James Madden, a forecaster from Exacta Weather, predicts an African Plume heading towards the UK, potentially resulting in temperatures as high as 35°C during the summer. He anticipates two heatwaves, one in early June and the other in mid-July, with temperatures reaching the low to mid-30s. However, Madden suggests that the summer of 2023 is unlikely to match the scorching heat of 2022, which saw temperatures soaring to 40°C.
While these periods may bring muggy, humid, and cloudy conditions with limited sunshine, they offer the potential for extensive late-summer heat and sunshine across various parts of the UK.
